Frequently Asked Questions

When is pecan season?

Pecans are traditionally considered a “holiday nut”, with highest sales around Thanksgiving and Holiday seasons. In order to bring our pecans to market at that time, we participate in an early harvest around the beginning of October. During most years, two pecan crops are collected and processed. Collection, cleaning and processing are usually completed by the end of November.

Why can’t I purchase pecans throughout the year?

While we would love to facilitate sales throughout the year, we believe in producing and distributing the highest quality of pecans possible. In order to do this, we sell our entire collected harvests each year, rather than keeping/freezing a selection of harvest for retail sales. This might decrease our overall profits, but we ultimately feel that it allows us to bring our consumers the best quality products for whatever needs they have.

How are pecans harvested?

While harvest season is centered around October and November, work continues throughout the year to ensure the highest quality pecans are produced by our orchards. Limb control is pursued throughout the year to ensure our orchards stay clean from debris. Additionally, this allows our team to individually assess the health of each tree in our orchard throughout the year and make location-specific decisions for any necessary spraying or treatment. Trees and roots are sprayed intermittently with different nutrient mixes, and protective products like insecticides and pesticides are used sparingly throughout the year when indicated.

Beginning in late September, a full raking procedure is done to collect as much detritus (leaf drop, small limb debris, etc) from the base of pecan trees. Following this, we physically shake the trees to facilitate nut drop. A harvester is driven around the base of the trees to collect dropped nuts. Harvest wagons are then individually processed on a cleaner, where quality control and quality assessment occurs by human hands and eyes. Here, our teams carefully select the highest quality in-shell pecans to be sorted based off of size and variety. Any deviations from our standard are recycled back to the land to be utilized by the land itself, or by wildlife present within our bounds.

Can I order wholesale amounts of pecans?

You most certainly can! Prior to our endeavors into the retail landscape, we sold our pecans on a wholesale basis only. In order to learn more about our wholesale process and sizes of orders, please visit our Wholesale Distribution page.

Are these pecans organic?

Heritage Farms does not hold an official USDA organic seal at this time. Instead, we have elected to pursue regenerative farming rather than organic farming. This means that we prioritize soil health over all else. In order to enrich our land, we have spent the past twenty years developing systems that work in harmony with nature to improve the quality of life of all organisms on our land—from the bees, to the trees.

At the current moment in time, we employ tactics such as carbon sequestration with planted pines and live oaks, no-till practices, protection of beneficial insect species and limited use of pesticides/synthetic fertilizers to keep our orchards as healthy as possible. Furthermore, Heritage Farms places large emphasis into waterway protection, as we have multiple rivers and creeks that run through our large swaths of property. This, in combination with extremely thoughtful development patterns has decreased air, soil and water pollution and been a large factor in erosion control.
